Welcome to Trektography

With over 700 television and movies combined, Star Trek has an amazing visual history. After watching Star Trek for almost 50 years, there have been a lot of shots that stick out to me as some of the best ever put to screen. What I wanted to do was put together some of my favorites, and write a little bit about why the shot is worthy of being represented here as one of the best. When I’m recording “This Week in Trek” and want to talk about a shot, the best I can do is mention or describe it. Here I’ll have a chance to show it.

Star Trek was created for the small screen in the late 1960s, but it was shot and preserved on 35mm film in HD. This allows the episodes to truly deliver the best representation of the hard work that the crews of the shows did. While Star Trek: The Next Generation has also been shot and preserved on 35mmin HD, Deep Space Nine and Voyager are still in 480i and have not been released in HD. Star Trek: Enterprise was shot in HD. Star Trek: The Animated Series was just released on Blu-Ray, and yes, there are some nice shots in that show as well. I’m looking forward to adding Star Trek Discovery to the site.

While Star Trek has its share of effects, I’ll try to focus mostly on the live-action shots. As far as TOS is concerned, both the original and remastered versions have their share of great effects. I’ll choose one or the other depending on which I feel gives a better representation of the shot.

I hope you enjoy the site.
